Fans of good soul music and music that is good for the soul have known and appreciated Maysa Leak for 30 plus years. Maysa lent her backing vocals to Stevie Wonder’s Jungle Fever soundtrack. We knew her as the best known and best loved of the rotating roster of super talented vocalists who helped create Incognito’s signature jazz/funk throughout the 1990s and into the 21st Century. Maysa’s voice – sultry, jazzy and soulful – powered Incognito to international super stardom on a series of albums in the 1990s – Tribes Vibes a Scribes, Positivity, 100 and Rising, Beneath the Surface and No Time Like the Future.
Maysa seamlessly made the transition to a solo career that has yielded 14 highly acclaimed albums and sold-out live performances, cementing her reputation as one of the best artists working in the game today. The Baltimore native established Blue Velvet Soul Records in 2018 to exercise full control over all creative and commercial aspects of music making.
Maysa has crafted a masterpiece with Music For Your Soul and the world recognizes the release as such since it dropped March 31, 2023. Upon release of the single “I Don’t Mind,” to commercial and critical acclaim, the song has been a mainstay at the top of the UK Soul Charts since its release.
Maysa is the kind of singer who takes hold of a song and enraptures her audience in the palm of her hands, as she delivers lyrics, phrases, melodies and harmonies in a way that only she can. Blessed with an instantly identifiable honey-toned mezzo-soprano and an undeniably brilliant and magnetic stage presence, Maysa’s alluring vocals, candor, honesty, humor and purity as an artist make her a rarity in this business. Having collaborated with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Incognito, Angela Bofill, Will Downing and Jonathan Butler, Phil Perry and more…Maysa can hang with the best. It is no wonder she was the recipient of many awards for her work, including Soul Train’s first Centric Award in 2009, and her first Grammy nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance for her remake of Nancy Wilson’s “Quiet Fire” in 2014. https://www.maysa.com/
